Services
Services at the Couples Clinic are specifically designed for persons
who want to increase their understanding and ability to grow within
their relationships with others. The primary focus is with couples
(primary) relationships; whether it is a new relationship in which
two people are just beginning to know one another, a well established
relationship in which certain problems have emerged, or the difficulties
inherent in the ending of a relationship.
Concerns about primary relationships are perhaps the most common
problem area identified by persons seeking psychotherapy. This
is largely because our primary relationships are so important
to our overall mental and emotional well being. Concerns brought
in by couples include issues relating to communication, sexuality,
forming clearer agreements and relationship boundaries, contending
with personal differences, and developing the ability to be close
without losing one’s own sense of self-definition.
Individuals will also seek assistance for problems which may not
primarily involve relationship to someone else, but may impact
their partners as well as themselves. Examples of individual issues
are concerns around depression or anxiety, managing the aftermath
of a traumatic experience, substance abuse, or seeking personal
growth and understanding. Partners can often be powerful allies
when an individual is taking steps to address and/or remedy these
problems.
Services
available through the Couples Clinic include:
* Psychotherapeutic Services: psychotherapy for individuals
and couples, group therapy and intensive workshops for couples,
psychological assessment and evaluation.
* Consultation Services: with public agencies, the courts, physicians,
private businesses, etc. Forensic (court related) evaluations
and consultation, including expert testimony where applicable,
represent a large portion of consultative activities.
*
Educational Services: public speaking, lectures, workshops,
training and supervision.
Getting
Started
Services are provided by appointment. Referrals may come from
physicians, agencies, attorneys, other clients, or an individual
may self-refer. For prospective psychotherapy clients, an initial
consultation will be arranged. This occurs in an 80 minute session
for individuals or couples, and is a time for your therapist to
get to know you, obtain information on your background and current
situation, and to discover the purpose (or desired outcome) in
seeking therapy. It is also a time for you to get to know your
therapist and how your set of circumstances might be addressed.
Time will be made available to discuss such important issues as
confidentiality, business items and scheduling.
Ordinarily,
individual sessions are conducted over a 50-minute hour; while
most couples are seen for 80 minute sessions. There is some flexibility
with this depending upon scheduling and financial considerations.
If a client wishes, they may contract for a standing appointment
time, which is consistent from week to week. Some clients prefer
to schedule session by session, as their time and resources allow.
